Getting Started

The game of hockey is a fast paced, exciting team sport that combines skill, fitness and team work. It is played by both boys and girls at a variety of recreational and competitive levels. Hockey Eastern Ontario realizes that those who are new to the game often have many questions to ask and we strive to answer them for you and provide you with all the information you require.

The first step for anybody interested in playing Minor Hockey is to determine what Minor Hockey Association they would belong to and contact that association for details on player registration. All Minor Hockey players must be registered with their local association.

HEO provides an online address lookup tool that will help you locate the association you belong to based on your current address of residency.

Benefits of Playing Hockey

Due to its fast paced nature the obvious benefits provided by playing hockey come from participation in physical activity. Participants improve their health and well being. Fitness, strength, flexibility, agility and coordination are all impacted and improved in a healthy manner. However, equally important are the life skills that hockey players develop that benefit them and carry over into school, home and eventually the work place. Players learn to work as a team towards common goals, they develop strong communication and listening skills, they learn to be supportive, cooperative and respectful. Hockey players also build self-confidence and self-esteem that help them in all areas of their lives.

Equipment

Safety is always a priority for hockey players. The game is fast, players use sticks and shoot a hard rubber puck. Being well protected is important for players and goaltenders. Hockey equipment can be expensive but there are economical alternatives. Many Minor Hockey Associations have buy and sell programs for second hand equipment. There are also many sport stores throughout the area that sell second hand equipment.
